Billy Lee September, 2008
After conducting several mural-painting events at CNCC ( China National Children’s Center ) in Beijing, The 1990 Institute finally convinced its leaders that, indeed, Mural Painting is an effective way to bring children from different cultures together and allow them to bond and share unique, worth-while, and unforgettable Magic Moments. At the May 2007 dinner celebration in Beijing, CNCC’s party secretary, Zhou Yu-Xing, and Deputy Director, Mme. Cong Zhong-Xiao, expressed thanks to The 1990 Institute and asked if The 1990 Institute could help CNCC to become a Long-term Mural Painting Center for The World’s Children. Without hesitation, The 1990 Institute agreed to serve in an advisory capacity .
On Sunday May 18, 2008 "CNCC –International Children’s Mural Park" was formally launched with speeches and ribbon-cutting by special dignitaries like Mme. Gu Xiulian (president of All China’s Women’s Federation and Vice-Chairperson of National People’s Congress ), Mme. Sarah Randt ( wife of US ambassador to China ) and many others. Representing The 1990 Institute were Directors Jim Caldwell and Billy Lee. Chairman CB Sung and his wife Beulah could not attend at the last minute, but they specially arranged to have Eric Xing and Nolan Feng , Directors of Unison Beijing to represent them.
The celebration was most colorful and festive. Prominent red banners – horizontal and vertical – stood out among the cluster of tall trees- some over 100 feet tall. The ground area was also covered by red carpet. Defining the general area at one side was the newly painted mural, which was about 7 feet tall and more than 100 ft. long. It had basically three sections : one emphasizing nature and wild animals. another introducing international people and architecture, and the third showing children from different countries playing or just running around – some bicycling. This mural in spirit is perfectly consistent with The 1990 Institute’s CAEP (Children, Art, and Environment Projects ) and our Magic Moments face2face. (which is also known as Xing Xing Qiao in Chinese or Bridging Heart to Heart in English translation)
The most special moment at the May 18 Celebration, however, was 1990 Institute’s "Expression of Gratitude and Thanks” to Mme. Gu Xiulian and Mme. Sarah Randt. Billy Lee represented the institute and presented special awards to Mme Gu and Mme. Randt together. It was six years ago – year 2002 – Mme Gu and Mme Randt served as our Keynote Speakers, and conducted the awards presentation to 100 gifted children - winners of the “Chinese Children’s Art on the Environment Competition”- participated by close to a million children from many different parts of China.
Another mural-painting festival is being planned at CNCC for April or May 2009.
